Meet Captain Shawn
The Story Behind Bama Bandit Sportfishing
Some people choose a career.
Others discover a calling.
For Captain Shawn, that calling has always been the water.
Born on June 3, 1971, Shawn fell in love with fishing at just 14 years old. During those early years, an experienced commercial fisherman recognized something special in the determined young angler and took him under his wing. The lessons Shawn learned went far beyond catching fish. He was taught how to read the tides, understand the weather, respect the Gulf, and appreciate that success on the water comes from patience, hard work, and never stopping the pursuit of learning.
Those early years became the foundation for a lifetime on the water.
As Shawn's knowledge and experience grew, he went on to own and operate his own commercial fishing vessels, spending years working the Gulf Coast waters he still fishes today. Long before he became a charter captain, he earned his living on these waters, learning seasonal fish patterns, hidden structure, changing tides, and the little details that only come from countless days at sea.
Then came 2010.
Like so many along the Gulf Coast, Shawn's life was forever changed by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. After helping with the cleanup efforts, he found himself at a crossroads. Instead of giving up on the life he loved, he embraced a new adventure.
That adventure took him thousands of miles away to Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
While working as a charter captain in one of the world's most famous sportfishing destinations, Shawn refined not only his fishing skills but also his philosophy of customer service. During that time, he met Kimberly, a professional sports photographer who shared his adventurous spirit and believed he had everything it took to build something of his own.
With Kimberly's encouragement and support, they launched Kona Cowboy Sportfishing.
Together they built the business from the ground up. Through hard work, exceptional customer service, and a genuine passion for helping others enjoy the experience of fishing, Kona Cowboy quickly earned outstanding customer reviews, a loyal following, and a reputation that spread largely through word-of-mouth. Even during the challenges of the pandemic, local anglers continued to book trips because they knew exactly what they would receive: an honest captain who worked hard, treated every guest with respect, and delivered memorable days on the water.
After four successful years, Shawn and Kimberly made the decision to return home to Alabama.
But they didn't come home to start over.
They came home bringing with them years of successful charter experience, new techniques learned from Hawaii's world-class fisheries, and an even greater appreciation for what makes a fishing trip truly unforgettable.
That experience became the foundation of Bama Bandit Sportfishing.
Today, Captain Shawn combines decades of commercial fishing experience, professional charter expertise, and a lifetime spent learning from some of the best fishermen on the water. His knowledge of the Gulf Coast is matched by something guests mention again and again in their reviews—his patience, his willingness to teach, and his genuine desire to see every guest succeed.
Captain Shawn believes fishing should never be about keeping secrets. Whether you're eight years old catching your very first fish or an experienced angler looking to sharpen your skills, he enjoys explaining techniques, answering questions, and sharing the knowledge he's spent a lifetime gaining. He believes there are plenty of fish in the sea, and helping others become better anglers only strengthens the fishing community.
That community has always been important to him. Over the years, Shawn has developed lasting friendships with commercial fishermen, charter captains, and anglers throughout the Gulf Coast and beyond. It's a close-knit community built on respect, shared knowledge, and a love for life on the water.
If you ask Captain Shawn what matters most at the end of a charter, he probably won't mention the number of fish in the cooler.
He'll talk about the smile on a child's face after catching their first fish.
The excitement of a family making memories together.
The confidence a beginner gains after learning a new technique.
The conversations shared on the ride back to the dock.
And the friendships that often begin the moment guests step aboard.
Of course, Captain Shawn fishes hard. He wants every trip to be successful, and he'll work tirelessly to put guests on fish. But his goal has always been bigger than that.
He wants every guest to leave feeling like they received far more than a fishing trip.
He wants them to leave with an unforgettable experience.
When you book a trip with Bama Bandit Sportfishing, you're not simply hiring a captain.
You're stepping aboard with someone who has spent a lifetime learning the water, a lifetime serving others, and a lifetime doing what he loves.
Captain Shawn looks forward to welcoming you aboard, sharing the waters he calls home, and helping you create memories that will last long after the last cast.
"Many guests step aboard as customers... and leave as friends."
